Summer Education Series 2022

Spiders – Many & Various:  Richard Schwarz

Saturday July 23, 10 am

Richard Schwarz has been a spider fan for years. “As you learn more about them you’ll appreciate these wonderful creations of nature” Richard said recently.  Spiders should be loved and encouraged not feared and swept away.

Richard has been leading spider walks in Toronto for some time, including in Rouge Park, and he is fascinated by them, and has gained extensive knowledge.

Spiders have eight legs and also 8 eyes; they can crawl backward and sideways as well as straight; and there are many more interesting things to learn about this species.  There are a lot of spiders hiding in the Urquhart Butterfly Garden, so the event promises to be both fun and informative.

The guided walk lasts about an hour and begins at 10 am on Saturday July 23. Please bring a chair and a sun hat.

If it rains the event is cancelled.

Free Workshop Saturday July 16,at 10 am

Naturalist Matt Mills will be the guide for Butterfly and Nature Identification walk and tour of the garden.  Butterfly numbers are noticeably lower this year, however Matt can always locate those that may not be obvious to the untrained eye.  At this time of year the garden is full of interesting insects as well as the butterflies.

Matt is a very experienced gardener and will be bringing a selection of organically grown native plants which can be purchased, and he will identify the native plants and other plant species in the Garden.

The session is open to all, and you will leave with a new knowledge and understanding of the wonderful diversity of wildlife at the Urquhart Butterfly Garden.  Saturday, July 16,  at 10 am.

You are requested to bring a chair and wear a hat. We will spend 1 hour in the full sun of the garden. The event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

The Urquhart Butterfly Garden is immediately adjacent to Centennial Park and the Hamilton Air Force Association at 128 King St. E in Dundas.

There is plenty of free parking and the location is easily accessible by public transportation or bicycle.
